CNN —One rescued crew member has died and seven others are still missing after two Japanese military helicopters appeared to have crashed during a drill late Saturday, Japan’s Defense Minister Minoru Kihara said. “It is very unfortunate that this situation has come to this point,” Kihara told reporters on Sunday. Kihara said that “there is a high possibility of a collision,” and the flight recorders of the two helicopters were found and recovered from the area. “What is believed to be part of the aircraft has been confirmed at sea, and the two aircraft are thought to have crashed,” Kihara said. The SH-60K helicopters are mainly stationed on and operated from destroyers, and the two aircraft were conducting night-time training to search for submarines, according to the JMSDF.

Speaking in Washington at a lunch with American CEOs, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Japan welcomes American collaboration in “critical and emerging technology” and assured them that any investment would flow both ways. Last year, Japanese foreign direct investment to the US exceeded $750 billion, Kishida said, making Japan the biggest foreign investor in America and creating more than 1 million jobs. It is reportedly the company’s largest ever investment in Asia’s second largest economy. Earlier this month, Japan’s industry ministry approved subsidies worth up to 590 billion yen ($3.9 billion) for Rapidus. It comes as Washington adds increasing restrictions on the types of semiconductors that American companies are able to sell to China.

Tokyo CNN —Japan’s space agency says it has successfully launched its flagship H3 space rocket, a year after its maiden attempt ended in failure. The H3 left the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan at 9:22 a.m. local time on Saturday, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said in a statement. H3’s maiden launch ended in failure last March when its second stage failed to ignite and its controllers issued a destruct command just 15 minutes after lift-off. That was just one of a string of problems for the maiden launch, which had already been postponed after ignition failures hit two of the rocket’s secondary booster engines. Experts say this could be used for drinking water or for fuel as humanity pushes the boundaries of space exploration in the future.

Tokyo CNN —An American airline passenger allegedly bit a female cabin crew member mid-flight on Tuesday, forcing an All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight bound for Seattle to return to Tokyo, an airline spokesperson said. Flight ANA 118 departed Tokyo’s Haneda Airport at 9:47 p.m. local time and turned around a little over an hour into its journey, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24. An ANA spokesperson told CNN that the male passenger was detained by police after the plane landed in the Japanese capital. The female flight attendant sustained minor injuries, the spokesperson said. In 2022, two passengers were given hefty fines for hitting and biting crew and other passengers on separate flights with US carriers American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

Tokyo CNN —A Korean Air plane clipped wings with a Cathay Pacific jet at an airport in Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on Tuesday amid heavy snow – an incident that comes just weeks after a fatal aircraft collision in Tokyo. No injuries were reported in the collision at Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport (CTS), which occurred around 5:30 p.m., according to the airport operator. The Korean Air jet had 289 passengers and crew on board, the Chitose Fire Department told CNN, while the Cathay Pacific plane was empty. Airport safety issues have been under scrutiny in Japan following a fatal collision at Tokyo’s busy Haneda airport on January 2 when a Japan Airlines jet burst into flames after hitting a coast guard plane. The crack was discovered about 40 minutes after take-off in the “second window from the right out of six windows in the cockpit,” ANA said. All 65 passengers and crew of the ANA flight 1182 arrived back safely, it added. The crack was discovered in the outermost of four layers of tempered glass on the cockpit window, the airline said. On January 5, a door plug on an Alaska Airlines flight blew open mid-flight, leaving a refrigerator-sized hole in the fuselage. The FAA said last week it was opening an investigation into Boeing’s quality control due to the failure of the door plug.

CNN —North Korea has fired at least one ballistic missile into the waters off the east coast of the Korean peninsula, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. Japan’s Coast Guard, citing information from the Ministry of Defense, announced that a projectile, believed to be a ballistic missile, was launched by North Korea and had landed in the sea. The JCS said the missile was launched from the Pyongyang area around 2:55 p.m. local time on Sunday and was believed to be intermediate in range. The South Korean, US and Japanese militaries are working together to analyze further details of the missile, the JCS said, adding that the South Korean military is maintaining “full readiness posture,” while closely sharing information on North Korea’s missile with the US and Japan. Tokyo CNN —A suspected gunman has barricaded himself in a post office in central Japan after two people were wounded and apparent gunshots heard in a hospital nearby, authorities said Tuesday. One doctor and one male patient were injured in the incident at a hospital in Toda city, Saitama prefecture, near Tokyo, police told CNN. The male suspect, believed to be between ages 50 and 70, fled the scene and barricaded himself in the Warabi post office, about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the hospital, according to police. Toda Mayor Fumihito Sugawara confirmed on social media that a man “suspected of carrying a gun” was barricaded in at the post office and warned residents not to go near the area. Tokyo CNN —China has formally arrested a Japanese man who was detained in March, according to officials from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Japanese Embassy in Beijing. The arrest of the Japanese national, who was reportedly an employee of a Tokyo-based pharmaceutical firm, could further rattle foreign businesses in China, which have reported feeling more unsettled this year amid a crackdown on international consulting firms on national security grounds. According to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, the man was an employee of drugmaker Astellas Pharma and was detained in March by Chinese security authorities in Beijing on suspicion of violating the country’s criminal law and anti-espionage law. In May, state security authorities said they had raided several offices of Capvision, an advisory network. The issue has been cited as headache for foreign businesses, some of which were already having trouble convincing workers to relocate to China.

Deaths have outpaced births in Japan for more than a decade, posing a growing problem for leaders of the world’s third-largest economy. The country also has one of the highest life expectancies in the world, contributing to the ballooning elderly population. To some extent, that messaging has worked: there are now a record 9.12 million elderly workers in Japan, a number that has grown for 19 consecutive years. Workers age 65 and up now make up more than 13% of the national workforce, the internal affairs ministry said Monday. CNN —US stocks typically see their worst performance of the year in September, but there are signs the market could avoid a steep downturn this time around. This month has been the worst for stocks on average since 1928, according to Yardeni Research. That’s partly because, much like August, there is a lull in economic data that could catalyze a stock rally. While stocks fell roughly 2% in August, they still outperformed their 4% loss during the same month last year. It’s the latest example of how extreme weather, exacerbated by climate change, impacted major North American attractions this summer, reports my colleague Nathaniel Meyersohn.

Noodle maker Nissin says it has the answer: caffeinated Cup Noodles. “To meet this demand, Nissin Foods is launching a new ‘gamer-friendly’ product for the first time in its history from its flagship brands Cup Noodles and Nissin Curry Meshi.”The caffeinated noodles will come in two flavors: garlic and black pepper yakisoba — which contains shrimp, pork, egg and cabbage — and curry, which uses a base of pork and vegetables. “Without the contributions of Japan, we wouldn’t have a video game industry,” Blake J Harris, a video game expert and author of “Console Wars,” told CNN in 2017. Tokyo CNN —Police in Japan have implemented an unusual strategy in order to prevent drunk driving: encouraging people to consume alcohol and then letting them loose on a driving course. Instructors rode in each car during the initiative, which took place inside the driving school, a police spokesperson told CNN. “We hope that more drivers will realize how dangerous drunk driving is,” said the police spokesperson. Alcohol consumption in Japan waned during the pandemic, with restrictions hitting the business of bars and other places selling drinks. In a post on its website in 2021, it called excessive alcohol consumption a “major social problem” that persisted despite the recent slowdown in consumption.

Tokyo/Hong Kong CNN —Toyota will resume operations at its Japanese assembly plants Wednesday after a 24-hour stoppage caused by disruption to its finely-tuned supply chain. “It is our understanding that the malfunction of the system was not caused by a cyberattack. The system saves warehouse space and money but is vulnerable to disruption if any link in the chain is broken. Together, Toyota’s plants in Japan account for approximately a third of the automaker’s global production, according to Reuters calculations. Last year, Toyota was forced to shut down Japanese production after a cyberattack on one of its suppliers led to a system failure and a similar issue obtaining automotive parts.
